Common Swimming Crab (Ovalipes catharus)
Average carapace width 10-13cm.

Occurs around New Zealand and Southern Australia. Widely distributed around New Zealand and on sandy seabeds in shallow waters. The related red swimming crabs occur in deeper water around New Zealand but are small, non-commercial species. Caught with baited traps or pots. Commercial fishery small but developing.

Flesh generally more delicate and sweeter than crayfish.
